Top 4 Ways to Share Files Anonymously

One of the main reasons to use the internet is to share files with other people. Whether it is for collaboration purposes or otherwise, file sharing has become second nature to most people. There are several ways to share files anonymously, although not all solutions are equal. Depending on what level of anonymity one wants to achieve, the following options are well worth checking out.

#4 We Transfer

The We Transfer platform can be quite appealing for people looking to share smaller files in an anonymous manner. The upload limit is 2GB for users without registration. Moreover, users are given full control over the upload process, which is rather unique. Using more upload storage requires users to sign up for an account, which nullifies the whole anonymity option.

#3 File Dropper

Similarly to the We Transfer platform, File Dropper lets users upload a file without having to create an account. In this case, the maximum file limit is 5GB, and a link will be generated automatically once the upload is completed.  Signing up is certainly possible, although there is no reason to do when trying to remain anonymous. Do keep in mind anonymously uploaded files will be deleted after 30 days unless they are downloaded at least one.

#2 GNUnet

GNUnet is a slightly different breed of anonymous file sharing options, as it is a full-fledged software client. This solution focuses on decentralization and peer-to-peer network. Keeping in mind how this software was first released 15 years ago, a lot of work has been put into making this project a success.

What makes GNUnet so intriguing is how Users can restrict file sharing connections to only the ones they trust. For example, a user’s friends can share the file with their own friends, rather than making it publicly available. File-sharing is just one aspect of GNUnet, though, as it also provides chat and VPN functions.

#1 OnionShare

More advanced users may want to check out the OnionShare file-sharing solution. This free peer-to-peer file-sharing service operates without intermediaries, and primarily focuses on security. What is of great interest is how users can share files of any size hosted on their computer through Onionshare, without the recipient having to install the software.

One requirement is how users will need to install the Tor browser if they want to make use of the Onionshare protocol. Executing the Onionshare app will start a locally-run web server, which uses Tor to share the files one wants to make available. As a result, users are not required to store files online to share them. Once the files are downloaded, the web server on the host computer will terminate automatically.
