Top 4 Use Cases for Augmented Reality

Not too long ago, we touched upon the topic of augmented reality and how it compared to virtual reality. As it turns out, there are quite a few people still on the fence about augmented reality, as its use cases are not all that clear. That being said, below are a few possibilities to integrate augmented reality technology for the benefit of our society.

4. Improving Citywide Administration

If there is one aspect about bureaucracy that needs an upgrade,  it is how individual cities organize their administration. A lot of these processed are bogged down with paperwork, departments not communicating properly, and unnecessary delays. A data-driven approach is needed, yet it will require help from the augmented reality sector to turn mountains of data into information to be used by smart cities.

It is evident Internet of Things and augmented reality are closely entwined in this regard. IoT devices make cities smarter and collect a massive amount of data in the process. Using the data to feed augmented reality apps allows city officials to envision hypothetical situations. Not only will this be useful for urban planning projects, but it can also be an invaluable tool for emergency responders.

3. Safer Working Conditions

Anyone who has to wear a helmet during their work shift can see a bright future for augmented reality. Creating a heads-up display that would allow workers to spot hazards and receive guided work instructions could be of great value in the long run. Moreover, augmented reality could provide a way to spot overheating components, which will make the workspace a much safer environment as a whole. An interesting concept to think of, that much is certain.

2. Improving The Agriculture Sector

Farmers have many tasks on their agenda every single day. Ranging from tending to crops and animals to repairing fences, checking supplies, and planning ahead are just a few examples of day-to-day agricultural operations. With augmented reality technology, farmers would be able to monitor moisture, temperature, and even keep track of equipment. Especially this latter part could be quite intriguing, as gaining valuable insights into the performance of commonly used tools will be a game changer for most farmers

1. Product Design

The most obvious use case for augmented reality technology comes in the form of visualizing product design. Giving designers the ability to visualize any product they are working on will shake the world as we know it to its core. Moreover, creators would be able to make changes in their software and see those changes appear in front of them in near real-time. Moreover, devices such as the Microsoft Hololens will allow interaction with the real world, allowing designers to overlay their creations over existing products.

Augmented technology seems to be the perfect use case for such a future. Additionally, the technology can bolster collaborative efforts between designers and engineers who have to turn the concept into a viable product. In doing so, both teams can speed up the production process, which is beneficial to any and every enterprise. Autodesk is working on such an idea already through their Fusion platform, as can be seen in the video below.
