Russia Unveils Their Version of the Terminator

It appears as if Russia is somewhat keen on new robotic weaponry all of a sudden. After unveiling their plans to build autonomous tanks, they have now shown off a Russian version of a robotic gunslinger. While some people may draw parallels to the Terminator right away, there is no reason to panic just yet.

What Does Russia Want With A Terminator Clone?

Ever since Russia’s deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin tweeted about their latest military toy, the world has been speculating as to what the country is up to these days. It seems Russia is preparing for World War III, although government officials will never label it as such. The country is focusing a lot of effort on robotic weapons, especially those with autonomous capabilities. Hence, the Russian Terminator is born.

To put the news into perspective, the country’s robotic gunslinger is quite an intriguing concept, to say the least. A video has surfaced about this new development, which goes by the name of F.E.D.O.R. It is unclear what this abbreviation stands for right now, although it is believed more details will be revealed as more time progresses.

As one would come to expect, Russia’s new robotic gunslinger is capable of handling guns with one hand or even both hands if needed. While it may not necessarily take up the traditional cowboy stance anytime soon, the correlation can certainly be drawn. It is evident Russia sees a bright future ahead for fighting robots, although it remains a mystery as to how they will be deployed.

What is rather disconcerting is how this project is developed in a very secretive manner. Although Russian officials claim F.E.D.O.R is ultimately peaceful, the demeanor of this machine seems to indicate otherwise. The country has no plans to create a Terminator-dominated world, but rather use artificial intelligence for multiple purposes. Apparently, that also includes building military robots.

It is not the first time Russia makes some headlines due to their development of new weapons. Just a few weeks ago, we mentioned how the country is looking into autonomous tanks, which would shake up the world of warfare altogether. Even though the country may claim they have nothing but peaceful intentions, all of these developments certainly point in a different direction. Only time will tell what will happen in the end, though.

It is good to see countries explore different use cases for artificial intelligence. So far, Russian officials have not confirmed F.E.D.O.R has any autonomous capabilities, although it seems likely to assume that is the case. As can be seen in the image embedded in the tweet, F.E.D.O.R. looks less scary than the original Terminator, yet it is still something will haunt people’s nightmares.
