Founding Member of the Apache Software Foundation Joins The Hyperledger Project

The Hyperledger Project, an open source blockchain platform being developed by the Linux Foundation in collaboration with 30+ companies, announced today the appointment of Brian Behlendorf as the project’s first executive director.

Behlendorf is most famous for developing the Apache Web server software, which is the most widely used server platform on the Internet today. Brian was also a founding member of the Apache Group, which became the Apache Software Foundation, in 1999.

Since 2003, Behlendorf has served on the boards of Mozilla Foundation and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. For the past three years, he was a managing director at tech-focused investment firm Mithril Capital Management, based in San Francisco.

Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation, which oversees the development Hyperledger Project, recognizes that Behlendorf’s contributions to the open source ecosystem did wonders for establishing the Internet across the globe.

Zemlin added that his talents will do the same to the proliferation of blockchain technology, “Brian’s open source roots and proven technology acumen will enable the Hyperledger project to grow a community that transcends any individual industry and becomes the world’s standard for shared ledgers.” explains Zemlin.

According to the press release, Behlendorf views blockchains and distribute ledgers as “essential to the next generation of the Internet technology stack.” Adding that developers at the Hyperledger Project will need to collaborate with the broader blockchain community to bring this exciting new technology into many industries.

In an interview with CoinDesk, Behlendorf said that his work at the Hyperledger Project will focus on permissioned blockchains and their specific uses cases, but he specifically stated he is “very enthusiastic about non-permissioned” blockchains as well.
